Typical examples are solar flares, magnetospheric aurora-substorms, and disruption of magnetically confined fusion plasmas. Recent development of laboratory experiment as well as solar and magnetospheric observations in space has revealed that the energy release mechanism common to these explosive phenomena is "magnetic reconnection". However, the following fundamental questions have not yet been solved: Why do magnetized plasmas explode ? What is the condition of fast reconneciton ? In this workshop, by inviting leaders of reconnection research and related area in the world and Japan, we shall review current status of reconnection research and then discuss future strategy of reconnection research in coming years. Main Topics origin of anomalous resistivity, role of magnetic helicity, nonsteady propagation of shocks and plasmoids, mechanism of nonthermal particle acceleration, case studies of explosive phenomena in magnetized plasmas in laboratory, magentosphere, and astrophysical plasmas, magnetic reconnection as nonlinear physics etc. SOC K.
