2013 CMO NEWS

 A. Conjunction this Year

The planet Mars will be at conjunction on 18 April 2013 at 0hGMT. Mars will then appear in the morning sky, but even at the end of this year, the apparent diameter δ will be just 6.8 arcsecs (on 30 December 2013 when the Martian season is λ =069°Ls), and hence this year we should say it is out of season to observe the planet. Mars will next be nearest to the Earth on 14 April 2014 with the maximal diameter 15.2 arcsecs. @

 B. Mars is Now in the Morning Sky

SOHO LASCO C2 images now show the planet Mars has moved back to the morning sky. Conjunction occurred on 18 April 2013. Mars will next be at opposition on 8 April 2014 at 11h GMT. Its largest angular diameter will be 15.16 arcsecs on 14 April 2014 at 13h GMT.
