Hi all,

Some good seeing on the 27th allowed a very good view of the Solis Lacus hemisphere and the best result so far this apparition. The Eye of Mars is dead centre with Valles Marineris/Melas Lacus especially well seen. Fine details visible across Aurorae Sinus. Olympus Mons is emerging from the morning mists at right. A nice rift bisects the SPC at top.

Greetings everyone,
Attached to this email please find my new photographs of Mars taken on the 27 th. and 28 th. October 2020 from my home.

The image on the 27 th. was taken at 18:50 UT, while the image on the 28 th. was taken at 20:50 UT.

I took the images as usual with my 6 inch SOLIGOR MT-750 reflector.

The images were shot afocal through a 15 mm Plössl eyepiece using a FUJIFILM JX600. I also used a 2x Barlow lens. Image stacking was done with REGISTAX. Further processing was done with IRIS and also ImageJ software.

The weather conditions were quite good. The seeing was good as well. I think that these images are the best that I have taken so far this year. Syrtis Major Planum looks very nice in the image taken on the 27 th. October.

Hi all,

Here is a set from the same night than that taken with the T620 of the observatory, but with one of the two RC500.

The UV image is now showing that Olympus Mons also is beginning to develop its seasonal orographic cloud. On the UV image, the local time is almost 13H so the cloud is growing; while on the UV image of the T620, it was around 10H40 and there was no cloud.

Dear CMO,
Attached is a Mars image from
October 25, 2020 13:15:42 UT

Comments:
Here is an LRGB image of Mars showing Syrtis Major and
Hellas with limb clouds visible.
I combined the IR channel with blue channel from the 224MC, then combined that result with the original 224MC data (in WinJUPOS).

I found this method shows surface details while still being able to reveal (some) cloud features.
Ideally R-G-B imaging would be better of course when the conditions allow.

Hi,

Finally some more time to complete this observation.

Note, the cloud cover on the edge and above the volcanic area.

By not strengthening the frames too much contrast, the polar cap is better reflected.

Hi all,

Here is a set of Mars images taken at the 620 mm Cassegrain of the AstroQueyras observatory on October 17th.

Seeing was fairly good, it could have been better since the site is usually blessed with superb seeing, being at an altitude of almost 3000 meters 🙂

Of note is the presence of orographic clouds over Pavonis and Ascraeus Monses, so this is the start of the northern orographic season.

It was not even Ls 300‹ on Mars and I believed these were not to begin before Ls 345.
Only the UV filter is clearly showing them, since the B image is still affected by the opposition effect, where the surface is brighter than usual, making the dark markings well visible in B - but not in UV.

Best regards,

I have attached here a montage from the session on 20 October.

Seeing was variable, mostly poor. Visually, I fixed my eyes (through bino-viewer) on the region around Hygens crater which looks lighter in the recent B images, but couldnft have discerned any change in color for the area.

Hi all,

I managed to finish up the evening with a full set on Mars.

Conditions, at least on screen, appeared to have deteriorated from earlier, so I was reasonably happy with the results.

These last few days, I am enjoying the morning cloud over Tharsis, although in the RGB, there is an interesting shaded effect at lower right, which is maybe highlighted by the clouds to the south.

Best regards, Clyde

Here is an image of the occultation of Mars by the Moon from back on Sep 6th i did not send previously.

This was taken with two different telescopes/camera combos running at the same time.

a 50cm F15 for the L data while a 76cm RC captured some colour data.

Hi, all

Grabbed some Mars data during a short clearing in the cloud with conditions not great.

Always one of my favourite views of Mars, although there are a few of them!

The B seems to show quite a bit of light cloud over Tharsis.

Have to say, I'm not overly happy with my RGB- struggled a bit with colour balance.

Finally we had a good night from Chile using the big scope after many attempts and weeks of lousy seeing!

Particularly interesting the enormous difference in size between the Elysium Mons and Hecates Tholus volcanoes toward top and the huge bright Olympus Mons over to the right side of the disk.

Hi All,

I have attached here images from 15 October 2020 session.

While I was observing through river fog under not so hopeless seeing, Mars image in the monitor screen suddenly burnt up, and I looked up to find the beautiful delicate winter milky way appeared high above our eastern mountain range, then Martian image started boiling up, made me giving up on the red planet.

Visually, before the cold wave came in, whole the Martian surface of this side seemed to be clearing up except morning/evening fog and NPH area. Darkened Indus and Oxia Palus looked exactly like Nessie sticking its neck out of Niliacus Lacus!

Hi, all

Late evening conditions have been unfortunately not as good as earlier in the evening, so I am having to take what I can from Mars. Itfs still lovely to see it so large on screen nonetheless.

This view looks almost directly down on Solis Lacus, with the Valles Marineris complex to its lower left. Plenty of cloud evident around the limb.

Olympus Mons is the light feature at lower right.
