Hi all, here's an image of Mars from last night in good seeing.

The seeing was steady over about 30 minutes, allowing me to record several RGB data sets.

Olympus Mons is visible just right of centre in the northern hemisphere, the circular shape of the central peak surrounded by its characteristic diamond-shaped terrain. The other three Tharsis volcanoes are visible lower down and closer to the right hand limb, starting with Arsia Mons showing quite a lot of white cloud, then Pavonis Mons to its upper right also showing some cloud, but much fainter, and then Ascraeus Mons which also shows a faint wisp of cloud if you look closely. A lot of bright cloud is visible over the right hand limb, and some fainter cloud is visible down in the southern hemisphere.

best regards
Anthony

A later start than normal last night. Conditions were poor.

Syrtis Major is to the right of centre. Hellas is towards upper right, with some cloud cover over its SW regions.

The forecast is not looking good for the next few days, so may I wish you and your loved ones all of the very best for the New Year- I hope you can enjoy the celebrations, whatever you have planned.

Hi all,

I certainly felt the effects of not having an observatory set up, as there was a stiff westerly wind that affected both my Jupiter and Mars sessions yesterday evening.

Despite that, I was able to capture a nice classical view of Mars centred on Syrtis Major with Hellas upper centre.

Hi all, here's a Mars image from this morning, conditions were reasonable for the whole session so I combined about an hours worth of data to make this image. Some jetstream blurring was present to the fine detail is limited. Some edge artifacts can be seen on the left due to the extended time difference between the first and last images.

Syrtis Major is prominent at upper left, Hellas can be seen rising at lower left with some clouds over that area. Extensive clouds can be seen over the north pole.

best regards

¤••••• Subject: Mars images on December 9-10th, with opposition effect "blue clearing"

Received: 22 December 2022 at 02:06 JST

Hi all,
Some very good seeing for my first Mars observation for the current season... just past opposition day.

These images show what was once known as the "blue clearing", when the dark markings become visible in blue lights - even in UV, there. This is now recognized as an "opposition effect" a photometric surge as the solar angle is closing to zero when the planet opposes the Sun as seen from Earth. This must increase the luminosity of the deserts noticeably more than that of the dark markings, reviving a level of contrast high enough for the latters to become visible again (btw I am also currently making some basic photometry and the planet looked to have been very bright).

At high solar angle (quadrature), the level of contrast falls to zero, and even reverses in the UV, making the dark marking bright and not dark. I also attache one of my set from 2020 at the same longitude, to compare.

Apart of this the south polar hood is growing as the equinoxe approaches (26/27 Dec.) ; the band of clouds where also observed in 2007 and 2021 at the same martian season. The futur spring north polar cap is now largely free from the hood, although it is less visible at these longitudes.

Hi all,

Image set from last night with S Meridiani central.

With the help of a family member who is visiting over the festive season I was able to spend some time on collimating the scope before this session, and despite some persistent wind and non-ideal seeing, I believe I made some good progress in fine tuning the optics. I will continue to check over the next few nights.

Ifve been having some one-on-one discussions with Richard McKim over the last few days regarding the possibility of mixed cloud/dust over the NP region, but with me knowing the telescopes collimation was slightly off, I was hesitant to make any definitive comment.

I canft be sure for certain, but am, however, now reasonably convinced in my own mind that there may be a real, slight reddish tinge. I saw a similar tinge in Tizianofs image set of 19th, which may add some weight to this. Anyway, worth keeping an eye on it.

With me being almost totally out of circulation the last +-4-5 months as we went through the move to Namibia, I really wasnft able to keep up to date with what was going on over that time period.. But it looks like l I missed out on some interesting developments!

I will try and catch up what has been happening when I have settled, but currently focussing on getting back into an imaging routine.

Hi all,

I am finding that by the time Mars rises above the bushes and trees in the garden, the temperature has stabilised (there is sometimes a +- 20 deg C drop from the warm daytime temps into the evening) and the westerly evening wind has dropped, giving me some decent conditions, despite Mars being at an altitude of 38 degrees for this set.

I am still seeing some signs that my collimation may be slightly off, but with family arriving today for the festive season, hopefully they can give me a hand sorting that out.

Plenty of detail across the planet, with subtle markings extending across the southern hemisphere and some beautiful wispy cloud in the south west (upper right). I also note a small cloud on the limb at upper left. The north polar region clouds remain quite complex.

Best regards, Clyde

Hi all, here's an image of Mars from this morning in reasonable seeing.
Some jetstream was present so the fine detail is limited but overall conditions were stable for the 20 minutes or so to record the 4 data sets that made this image.

Syrtis Major is prominent as the large dark feature just right of centre,
Hellas Basin is visible at lower centre, clouds are visible over the north pole at top and the west/east limbs.

Hi all, here's an image of Mars from around midnight last night in overall good seeing. The session was periodically interrupted by clouds and poor seeing however there were some periods of quite good seeing.

I livestreamed some of the Mars session last night on facebook, the video is there for anyone to watch and skip through to the parts that you might find interesting. If conditions are good again tonight then I'll do this again from around
midnight my time (1400 utc), depending on weather.

cheers, Anthony

Hi all, here's an image of Mars from this morning in good seeing.

The three Tharsis volcanoes can be seen in a line near the left limb. Blue clouds cover much of the north however the white polar cap can be faintly seen.

This image is made from one R,G,B set of data that was recorded in much better conditions than any of the others that sadly lasted only a few minutes. Adding more data from other recordings would have degraded the final image so in the end I went with just a single R,G and B (75s each @ 80fps) even though I have more than an hours worth of data.

Hi all,
Here are some results obtained during my last stay at the AstroQueyras Observatory.

The 620 mm was slightly miscollimated, which added to its usual trefoil, and nothing could have been done without the correction by the PSF of the instrument !

The season was Ls 330 and the edge of the winter polar cap is clearly detected in R and IR.

In UV, we can see the usual suprising behavior of the red deserts, that become very dark while the usual dark albedo markings are not visible, or even brighter than the deserts, at high phase angle. This behavior disappear at opposition.

No beyond-terminator clouds were recorded.

Hi all,

It is just over a month since I moved from South Africa to settle in Namibia and I am only now managing to get some sense of calm after an intense last 6 months as we prepared for, and executed, the move.

In the last few days I have managed to set up the C14 in a temporary location (I will rebuilt the observatory in due course, but it will still take some time) and hope to return to my regular imaging.

Attached is a set from late on the 2 December, with the IR captured just after midnight.

Elysium is at lower centre with the S. Gopher extensions clearly seen.

After the 1500km roadtrip and also with me cleaning the corrector plate last weekend,

I still need to spend some time on fine tuning the collimation, but itfs a start!

Hi all, here's an image of Mars from this morning in variable seeing.
The low altitude made it difficult to get any consistent quality to the data but I merged several runs in WJ to get this image from the best of the conditions.

Olympus Mons can be seen rising at upper left, with Valles Marineris / Solic Lacus close to the centre of the image.

Prominent cloud is visible over the north pole and rising limb at lower left.
