¤••••• Subject: Venus 2023 April 29

Received: 2 May 2023 at 10:11 JST

Here are some images of Venus approaching dichotomy.

As the contrasts are always very slight in IR, R and B, these images sharpened to the level where the bright limb is burned out. It is seen that the detail in R is similar to that in IR, and in B similar to UV.

As the UV image is always very blurred with my system, I thought I would concentrate on the others, and make an experimental RGB false-colour composite using IR, R and B respectively. The IR/R-bright areas look yellow in this.

Very interesting! I have been doing observations at IR and UV wavelengths so this will help me sort out which filters might be best.

Hi all,
In 2020 I had used the crescent phase of the planet as a pseudo-slit to get some first spectra of the planet with the Star Analyzer. But now I made them with the Alpy600 and the results are much more resolved.

The conclusions remained the same however. The UV absorber is well detected in UV, but is identified as active as well in the deep blue part of the spectrum, in coherence with details obtained with such filters as the W47.

Although I did observed a solar-like star to correct the spectra (Lambda Aurigae), I have prefered to make profit of the solar spectrum contained inside the blue sky spectrum, which has been observed just before Venus at the same airmass. This allowed me, for pedagogical purposes, to correct the profile up to 360 nm, when the Alpy600 becomes completely blind.

Best regards,

Hello,

With Mars so small now, the main reason I was able to make this observation was due to the very good seeing.

I did not see any bright areas using the red (23A) filter, so I don't think there is much dust currently.  I did see bright clouds on the p. limb in integrated light (IL) and blue light, which would indicate atmospheric clouds (water ice or CO2 ice).  There was also a bright patch over Solis Lacus/Ganges on the f. limb which I found very interesting.

Mare Erythraeum to the south and Mare Acidalium to the north were both fairly dark--Meridiani not so much.  The NPC was narrow and bright with a dark collar.  There was also a bright spot in the south polar region.

Manos --
It sounds as though you may have preserved enough channel data for me to analyze. I am planning on analyzing all of Greg Shanos's images later this year, and if you have a good number of them, they might contribute significantly to the study. I'd be pleased to see receive all of them.

You may have noticed the message that I sent to the marsobservers list just now. I emphasized the need to process images the same way every time in order that they may be analyzed, and preferably there should be little or no wavelet use or other contrast enhancements. Often such unprocessed images are not kept, but if you have them, they are the ones that I want.

Thanks for considering this.
