Hi all,

Reasonable conditions towards sunset yesterday afternoon.

Syrtis Major is to the right of centre, with Hellas on the upper right limb.

Hesperia is at upper left.

Boreosyrtisis at lower centre.

Some cloud appears to be present over Elysium on the left limb.

Hi all,

I had some clear sky yesterday afternoon after a few days of cloud. There was a strong wind blowing, and the session was only salvaged by a frame rate in excess of 400fps, with the planet moving all over the chip’s ROI. Other than that there was significant jetstream.

The RLP and R came out surprisingly well, with Syrtis Major extending up from centre. The B remains challenging. Boreosyrtis is evident lower left of centre, with Syrtis Minor at upper left.

A bright Hellas is on the upper limb (likely frosted). Sinus Sabeaus is near the terminator at upper right.

Hi all,

I’ve been prevented from imaging for a number of days due to afternoon cloud.

Attached an image from this afternoon, about 50mins before sunset. Conditions were difficult with wind at ground level and strong Jetstream overhead, so I stayed with the R610LP.

Syrtis Major is to the left with Sinus Sabeaus and Sinus Meridiani extending across the planet above centre.

Some brightness is seen in/over Hellas at upper left.

Hi all,

I started yesterday afternoons session about an hour before sunset to catch Mars at higher altitude and also to try and capture RGB before some forecast cloud.

Although far from ideal, I did manage to get a barely acceptable B, indicating some cloud along the morning terminator.

Sinus Meridiani and Sinus Sabeaus are at upper left, M Erythraeum at upper right, Niliacus Lacus and M Acidalium at lower right and Margaritifer above centre.

Hi all,

Light cloud prevented decent G and B captures yesterday afternoon, but I did manage limited R610LP and R captures, which I have presented for comparison.

Niliacus Lacus is again central, with M Erythraeum at the top and M Acidalium towards the bottom.

Margaritifer Sinus and Indus remain prominent.

Thanks to interaction with, and feedback from, the NASA MRO/MSSS team, I was able to confirm that the lightness along Valles Marineris is in fact a result of dust activity arising from localised dust storms that have moved north from the Solis Lacus region over the last few days. My sincere thanks to Dr B Cantor of Malin Space Science Systems for this feedback.

Hi all,

I had some interesting seeing conditions well before sunset yesterday afternoon, with some short periods of really nice seeing interspersed with a total disintegration of the image on screen.

Unfortunately the good periods didn’t extend towards sunset and I was unable to capture any decent RGB data.

Niliacus Lacus is central with Mare Acidalium extending below it. Margaritifer/Indus are quite obvious. Hydospes is also noted.

Sinus Meridiani is seen on the upper left limb.

I again note the lightness of eastern Valles Marineris region extending below Mare Erythraeum.

Hi all,

I had some reasonable pre-sunset conditions yesterday afternoon, although the B was barely usable.

Mars has finally dropped to 4.0”.

Nilokeras is central.

The R610LP is interesting, and I am wondering if there may be some dust activity along eastern Valles Marineris.

Hi all,

Following a few evenings of cloud, conditions, particularly for G and B, were not good enough for an RGB.

Higher contrast features have rotated into view, with M Acidalium and Niliacus Lacus to the lower left. Nilokeras is almost central with a faint Ganges to its upper right.

Aurorae Sinus is upper left of centre with Valles Marineris extending to its upper right. Margaritifer Sinus/Oxia are near the centre left limb.

Hi all,

Image set from yesterday afternoon, shortly after sunset. Olympus Mons is just to the right of centre. The dark streak to the left coincides with Lunae Lacus-Ganges, likely enhanced by the bright limb. The darkish feature to the lower left of centre has been noticeable for a few days now, and appears to lie in the Nilus region.

Valles Marineris is on the upper left limb and higher contrast features should come into view in the coming days.

I am wondering if the SP Hood is not becoming visible (G)?

Hi all,

Another bright sky image set from yesterday afternoon with the RGB captured 7 mins before sunset.

The RLP, R and G conditions were decent, but the B was poor, making interpretation of the NP region difficult.

The “doughnut” of Olympus Mons can just be made out to the left of centre. Mare Sirenum is near the upper limb. Propontis I is near the terminator at lower right.

The NPC remains quite distinct in the RLP, R and G. In the R, the light spot to the right of the NPC appears to coincide with Olympia in the Winjupos simulation, although there does appear to be an extended light feature.

Hi all,

Image set from yesterday afternoon in bright sky conditions, 3 mins before sunset

The view looks down on Amazonis, with Mare Sirenum at the top. Propontis I is at lower right.
A relatively cloud free Olympus Mons is to the left of centre.

The main cloud on the left limb appears to be over Ascraeus Mons, with further cloud to its north west.

Scandia extends across the bottom of the image.

The RGB is negatively impacted by the edge artefact in the R.

Hi all,

Another twilight attempt on Mars.

The R and R/IR remain acceptable, but the G and B captures are progressively more difficult in the light background and low altitude, making the RGB challenging, and somewhat unreliable.

Propontis I can be seem lower left of centre, with Propontis II best seen in the R below it.

The R610LP shows the Scandia, Panchaia and Lemuria regions in the far north(at bottom).

Mare Cimmerium is at upper right with Mare Sirenum near the upper left limb.

There appears to be bright cloud over Olympus Mons on the left limb.
