¤••••• Subject: Mars events in 2027

Received: 27 February 2026, 04:48 JST

Dear Mr. Murakami,

The year 2027 will mark the 150th anniversary of Schiaparelli's Mars map (with nomenclature and canals) and Asaph Hall's discovery of the martian satellites.  A number of events are being planned around the world, and I would like to get observers of the CMO involved. Especially there will be an attempt to coordinate observations (both visual and CCD images) at Mars's February 2027 opposition, which I am planning to observe in Flagstaff.  Could you possibly announce the planned celebrations of Mars to our Japanese colleagues?

I will always have the greatest affection for my friend Masatsugu Minami, whom I often call the last great visual observer of Mars.  I will always cherish the time that I and Tadashi Asada had in May 2004, including the visit we all made to Noto. (See picture attached)

  Best wishes,

Bill SHEEHAN (Flagstaff, AZ)

Hi all,

I cannot claim anything more than that I was (just!) able to detect Mars yesterday morning, about 50 mins after sunrise and 46 days after solar conjunction (9 January).

Understandably very difficult conditions, and I don’t believe any surface detail is visible. I also haven’t indicated any orientation.

Solar elongation was 10.7 deg.

I personally will not be expecting any useful images for a while, but will monitor from time to time to assess conditions.

But it may be an interesting challenge for other observers.

Best regards, Clyde
