Hi All, I have attached RGB Mars images from 1 March.

http://www.kwasan.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~cmo/cmons/2011/120301/DPk01Mar12.jpg

The NPC rift remains prominent. Clouds were conspicuous over Syrtis Major and on the AM limb. Chryse hazes were still present.

Best,

Don PARKER (Coral Gables, FL)

Hi All,

I have attached RGB Mars images taken on 22 February by Sean Walker and me. The seeing was very good despite the low altitude. Shot at f/72 -- we were experimentally pushing the envelope!

http://www.kwasan.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~cmo/cmons/2011/120222/DPk22Feb12.jpg

Note the NPC rift. It lies in roughly the same position as classical reports of the Rima Tenuis. There is also dust along the following edge of the cap and hazes crossing Chryse, giving the appearance of a weak ECB.

Best,

Don PARKER (Coral Gables, FL)

Greetings,

Attached is my full observing report and a separate tonal drawing of Mars done last night (March 1st UT).  The drawing didn’t scan quite as well as the previous one, so I smoothed it a bit in Photoshop Elements.  I think I have to make the lighter portions of the disk a bit darker than I did this time.

Dear. Dr. Minami, Mars' opposition day is drawing near at hand, but the weather around here hasn’t been cooperative at all these days. Snowy midnight on 27 Feb. I had been repeatedly listening to my latest “Good Weather Song”<One of These Days> (Pink Floyd), which I had chosen because it had seemed to have a Force to cut the hateful heavy clouds into little pieces. And it worked quite well! ; by one o'clock it cleared up beautifully, rated as 5/5 transparency, the deep orangey planet was high in the sky shining garishly like the apparition of a UFO. To my bitter disappointment however, Mars in the X500 view field of my 12inch SCT was none other than a swollen fuzzy fireball drifting around crazily in a storm. Three separate lighter areas were barely visible along the planet's periphery. I had to replace one of the 6mm orthoscopic eyepieces(I use Baader Planetarium 60 degrees binoviewer) with a same f ocular with an illuminated reticle/circumferential position angle meter to check the celestial W-E line in the field with which with the given P.A. of North Pole I could have identified the most dim one as the NPC. No other albedo marking was discernable.

It was too late when I remembered that the title of the Pink Floyd song of the Japanese release was hoo-kei-yo kaz-zeh, yob-beh yo a-la-shee) which translates to “Blow, Wind! Call Forth, Storm!”!!  So, any Martian colleague, please find me a powerful Good Weather/Seeing Song (or any other kind of ritual would do)!

  Best Regards,

Enclosed my Mars images from February 24, 2012, lots of thin high clouds that trew off my imaging session from that night, processed the sets a few times and this is the best I can come up with. Some nice detail is visible, also because of those clouds it was hard to adjust the histogram setting so some channels sere over-exposed for that matter.

Dear Masatsugu,

 http://www.kwasan.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~cmo/cmons/2011/120226/WFl26Feb12.jpg

The skies cleared here just before midnight on February 25th and I was able to capture a few images of Mars as it approached the meridian.  Seeing was average and variable.  It has been almost exactly a month since I have been able to observe Mars.  As others have reported the NPC has shrunk significantly since the end of January. There also appears to be a rift in the NPC showing on these two images.  The blue mist is prominent on the morning side especially near the equator. The blue images also seem to show the equatorial cloud band that is just barely visible in the color composite.

It's cloudy here again and the weather forecast is for more rain and clouds until Saturday this week.  It looks like I may be able to get another chance on the morning of March 4th just a few hours after opposition.  Hopefully I'll have both clear skies and good seeing!

Best wishes,

Bill FLANAGAN (Houston, TX)

Sorry for my long absence from the CMO Mars web site! I have recently done some maintenance on my homemade 250mm Reflector, and now have it back in top shape. (Now if I could just find that darn IR filter!)

I have enclosed my latest Mars image. I will try to take more when the weather clears here in Houston. I did not expect much from this apparition since Mars is still so far away, but was somewhat surprised at what I could see in the eyepiece. The seeing has been poor in southeast Texas, and it has been raining here lately. (Although the severe drought we suffered last summer seems to be lifting). 250mm L @ f/25, ToUcam Pro (no IR), Haze on limb near Syrtis Major. M Acidalium area dark and easily visible.

I wish you clear skies and steady seeing,

Keigu,

Olympia is prominent next to the NPC (thanks Richard), but I'm glimpsing here and on some other recent images a very faint rift in the cap. Is this Chasma Borealis seen on the other side, or could it be Rima Tenuis (whatever it is)

Hellas is still free from ice. It should change within weeks.

Note also that the ECB is quite more visible in violet and UV images here; SM stills shows partially on B images but not on those ones.

Dear Masatsugu,

Thank you for the feedback and the encouragement.

I was tired when I posted my image taken on the 23rd and did not comment on the fact that there was great deal of colour difference between Olympia and the rest of the NPC. I used Olympia as a reference (white) for adjusting the colour balance and that made the NPC remnant rather red, perhaps suggesting the presence of dust over the region.

Thanks for the note.  I'm doing fine but the weather here has not been cooperating.  It has been cloudy virtually every night since I took my last images in January.  Quite often it would clear during the day but then cloud over by midnight before Mars rose above the tress in my backyard. It's cloudy now but the forecast is for skies to clear around midnight (a nice change).  I plan to try to catch Mars tonight if the weather cooperates. Hopefully I will have some images to send to you soon!

Dear Masatsugu,

Just back from Paris, and pleased to be greeted on my return with the latest CMO and the marvelous article by Francis Oger on the Sorbonne Observatory.

Just last Sunday, Francis, his wife Yoko, my wife Debb and I made a pilgrimage to Juvisy—though the place is overall a depressing ruin, as you recall, for reasons Francis can best explain, it has at least now a working telescope in its cupola, and we managed to get some good observations of Venus, Jupiter and—above all—our chef d’oeuvre, Mars.  (The latter was rising over the lawn of Flammarion’s estate—it was really splendidly evocative of the imagination.) Francis even managed to get us to the train station—with about two seconds to spare—for the train from Juvisy back to the area of Paris where we were staying (the other side of Paris!).  I shall long remember this evening as a highlight of a many-splendored trip.

In due course, I hope that Francis and I can write up the experience for CMO.

Referring to each RGB component (especially B one) would be essential!  As for myself, I have been repeatedly listening to my recent “good weather song ”By the Time I Get to Phoenix (by Glen Campbell) tonight, but it won't work at all!…began raining now.

I reprocessed my Saturn data to better show a very compact bright spot in the northern (green) belt. You can see it about halfway to the right hand edge. It's a very bright spot in the green channel data, but as the rest of this belt is green it's not so easy to see, so I've added an inset with that area processed to highlight it.

Dear Christophe

Many thanks for this. Olympia is the outlier, which already detached some time ago. It should shrink but will persist until the NPC is covered by the hood later.

I too noticed the Syrtis Blue Cloud visually on Feb 18, when the Syrtis Major was a light blue at the evening terminator and there was evening cloud either side of it in Libya-Isidis and S. Aeria.

I waited up late as clear sky was approaching on the satellite under a favourable south westerly wind. Luckily the cloud cleared just in time while Mars was still at a reasonable altitude. Quite pleased I did wait it out as I caught my best set of images so far this apparition. Chryse/Acidalium central with bright limb clouds:

The RGB image shows very well the famous "Syrtis blue cloud". Again, other notable white cloud activity is the equatorial cloud belt and the morning mists. Also note an outlier near the polar cap (this one must be temporary).

Hi Guys

http://www.kwasan.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~cmo/cmons/2011/120219/DTy19Feb12.jpg

I was happily processing my IR sG B of Mars from the 20th and jumped to the very last one taken at 01:24 ut, in proper RGB on slightly higher mag, and was surprised to see the top left of the image sporting a yellow "comb over". Compared to the attached 2005 image there does appear to be some obscuration. It occurred to me that the earlier IR dominated images had "seen through / ignored'" this thin dust ?

Worth keeping an eye open.

Like Damian, I managed to get an image in just before the 'unexpected' clouds rolled in. Seeing was patchy with short good periods nestled inside longer rather blurred ones. Just as the clouds pulled closer, so the image of Mars started translational jumping - a good indication to give up!

Attached: NPC 15 Jan 2012 Mars Express ESA DLR.jpg, 12Feb MRO MARCI 285deg.jpg

Dear Dr. Minami, I am glad to learn that ESA’s Mars Express finally woke up from a long sleep (being in safe mode) which had been caused by an anomaly affecting the onboard solid-state mass memory system on the satellite. Attached here is one of the latest images taken by MEX’s High-Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) using newly developed commanding system on 15 Jan 2012.

Judging by the shape of the P-ring the image shows the Martian NPC’s peripheral area centered about at Long. 285°W. Very impressive is the residual cap’s reddish tone (“Mars-colored” would be more appropriate?) which may be in accordance with the results of spectrophotometric study by S. Erard (introduced in Christophe PELLIER’s LtE on 29 Jan 2012). Is the reddish tint superficial? or substantial? Also attaching an MRO MARCI image on 12 Feb 2012 showing the area with a dotted square.

I’m also looking forward to the resumption of the operation of MEX’s VMC…Visual Monitoring Camera, just a simple color webcam, images of which had been successively opened to the public. Actually I’m a VMC fan, it’s been always pleasing to see VMC shots often taken with unexpected angles.

  Clear Skies with Good Seeing!

here a set of 3 images from 12th February 2012. On that morning the seeing between 2 Blizzards was very poor. I had to use a 665 nm Filter instead the normal red filter to capture some albedo structures. Only the last image was taken under better conditions, there I could use the normal red filter.

http://www.kwasan.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~cmo/cmons/2011/120212/SKw12Feb12.png

On that day I also had a lot troubles with the cables, I lost the signal from the cam and was busy to find the mistake, then my powersupply struck, so I could not image in 40 minute rhythm as I wanted. :-((...

Use of UV has so far not been possible, the image is too faint, so these show IR and B. The Feb 01 images are at a similar time to Dave Tyler's R image but do not show the streak in the S that he recorded.

Also, the orographic clouds over Olympus Mons got even brighter by the time I was imaging. I will post my images later on.

¤······Subject: Re: Mars 3 February

Received: Sun 05 Feb 2012 07:24 JST

Dear Don

Thank you for the nice images. The annular rift in the N. polar cap has been observed in several recent apparitions. I first became aware of it, as far as telescopic work goes, in 1995, although it showed up poorly in the more grainy CCD images of 1993 when the value of De was less positive. It was at that time I realised it represented an early glimpse of the dark polar dune field that later surrounds the summer cap. Measures of its latitude confirmed that. It was caught at higher resolution in the more recent aphelic approaches. The HST images of the 1990s showed it very well, and it is therefore rather odd that some earlier, though very hi-res work does not show it. Here I am thinking of the Dollfus drawings and maps from Pic du Midi in 1948-52 which do not reveal it. Some earlier observers showed it occasionally. Slipher, in unpublished drawings from the early 1930s, for example. I am wondering if Capen saw it in the 1960s with the large scopes at his disposal.... I must check! Because the cap is so bright, I think the human eye often fails to see such detail visually, unless filters are used. Even then, the rifts appear delicate telescopic objects.

But your image also shows a further dark feature in the extreme north, in red and RGB composite. I think this is for us the unusual item in the image, though it may just be normal, but new to us for we are imaging at higher resolution than in the pre-webcam era of the 1990s. During the HST era the annular rift seemed to vary in intensity from year to year suggesting some variation in the bright deposits. The far northern dark spot could be dust. You will recall the similar patch seen near the S. pole in the 2003 opposition.

I think the Aetheria development is finally shrinking in area and fading, and I have suspected this to have been the case for the past few months. The feature has been so prominent since 1982 and traceable back a few more apparitions. It would be nice if Mars would again develop the Nepenthes near Syrtis Major, for that's a feature I have never had the chance to witness in all my observing career.

It all goes to show that Mars is well worth observing with our scopes!

All the best

Richard McKIM (Peterborough, the UK)

Hi All,

I have attached RGB Mars images from 3 February. Bright orographic clouds are seen over the Elysium Shield; interesting NPC "rifts" still appear... is this possible dust? Trivium-Cerberus are still very weak and the Hyblaeus Extension does not appear as dark as in previous apparitions, but gusty winds and highly variable seeing make this hard to evaluate.

Dear all areoholics, It’s already late autumn in the Martian southern hemisphere, and some largest craters in high southern latitudes are expected to be frosted.

On the image taken by Teruaki KUMAMORI (Km) on 31 Jan 2012 15:41GMT (λ=064°Ls, ω=045°W, φ=23°N, ι=23°), I noticed that frosty Argyre (over 600km across super-crater) and also frosted easterly adjoining 230km in diameter crater Galle are just about to be discernable near the southern end of the image:

 (Km’s Image: http://www.kwasan.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~cmo/cmons/2011/120131/Km31Jan12.jpg )

I am attaching here an HST image on 25 Feb 1995 (λ=064°Ls, φ=18°N, ι=11°), the season of which is just the same as that of Km’s image. You can clearly see the frosty Argyre and Galle (yellow arrows) collectively look like “an easterly lying snowman” or “a frosty turtle heading eastward”.

CMO/ ISMO colleagues’ Big Guns, I believe, will quite easily get its images soon. And, if I have a chance, I want to catch the object visually, a bit challenging (Note Added: maybe as Christophe PELLIER predicted in the SAF, Section Mars report Apparition Mars 2011-2012, partie 2: Phénomènes observable (15/01/2012)

 http://www.astrosurf.com/planetessaf/mars/doc/Ph%E9nom%E8nes%20observables%20sur%20Mars%20en%202011-2012.htm).

Besides its meteorological importance, it may give a hint of the apparent sizes of the Martian larger craters as seen from the Earth… YES, I’m still adhering to the earth-based visual detection of the shadowed relief images of Martian craters!  Any objections?

  Good Seeing with Excellent Scopes!
