Hi all,

Here is a map of the entire Martian surface from the period following opposition.

Produced from images taken by myself using the 1m telescope in Chile and kindly compiled into a map by Sebastian Voltmer this view from the period following opposition shows the Martian surface having become clearer from the global dust storm that had been raging in previous weeks. Some active dust plumes are still visible on the surface in the map. All of the familiar major features can be seen. The south polar cap is a bottom.

http://www.damianpeach.com/mars2018/marsmap2018.jpg

We also produced a video comparing the changing dust patterns across the surface between images taken by ourselves across the period (from Chile and Namibia.) The animation can be seen here:

Dear Masatsugu and Masami,

I’m finally catching up processing some Mars data I have had for a few weeks.  Attached are images of Mars taken on 26 September,  5 October and 12 October 2018.  The October 5th and 12th images appear to show some dust activity at the SPC.  Also Mars still appears quite dusty, the image on October 12th seems to show Olympus Mons poking through a dusty haze.

Best wishes,

Hi all,

Mars image set from yesterday evening, a bit later than usual due to cloud.

I compared an image of this region from 2016, and it appears that a significant portion of the western side of Syrtis Major has been affected by this years dust storm, and that, in my opinion,  Syrtis Major now appears narrower.

Seeing was about average (3/5). The SPC is extremely bright in relationship to the rest of the planet, so I had to take great care not to burn out detail during processing.

Poor conditions last night with cloud moving in.

Despite this I suspect that the Mountains of Mitchel may just be detected.

With this view, I cant help but think about Opportunity rover, and hoping it will respond in time.

Received: 4 October 2018 at 12:35 JST

Hi all,

My first, rather tentative, attempt at planetary mapping, and no doubt I will refine it in due course. The map covers the period from 12 August through 9 September 2018. This was the period when the planet was recovering from the major dust storm which initiated at the end of May. I believe this selection is a good compromise with the planet clearing, and detail re-appearing, and the planet reducing in size. The map is generated from eight captures over the time period. With widely varying seeing conditions, the gibbous phase, combined with the dynamic changes on the planet as the dust cleared, all I can say is that I have renewed respect for Marco Vedovato and the Jupos team!

Best regards, Clyde
