Seeing excellent.  Note the incredible blue-gray festoon/extension from the NEBs into the NEZ just east of the CM.  Also the excellent detailed fine detail within the NEZ pr. that area.  This area of turbulence is beginning to increase in both scope and intensity.

Seeing has deteriorated rapidly and equipment problems are being encountered so I will not be able to image the areas near the GRS and SSTC white spots at this time....

VERY interesting NEZ feature seen in this image, however......

Seeing poor.  Note the fantastic feature (yellow oval and associated activity) within the NEZ, just w. of CM.  Also note the dusky gray-brown oval pr. the GRS and within the s. edge of the SEBs, just w. of CM

Seeing is very poor and variable; focusing very tough but first clear evening in over two weeks for imaging!

Seeing very poor.  Interesting dichotomy within the north and south halves of the NEB; considerable turbulence in southern 1/2 of this belt, with a clear delineation of both activity and intensity....result of opposing currents?

Seeing very poor.  Two very nice and interesting dusky ovals in this image....note the one embedded in the s. edge of the SEBs right on the CM (about 345d II); another VERY prominent oval (or is it perhaps TWO) is visible west of the CM in the NEZ...it is very large and dark and shows development since last seen (System I).

Well, April 1 has come and gone almost like a bad April Fool's joke.  The sky was beautifully clear and crisp with the moon not interfering until after about 4:15 UT....but the seeing was the worst I have seen perhaps all year.  This final image from tonight was taken through some distant trees toward the end of the sequence of some 30 exposures....

"jupiter0401c" -

Seeing worst possible, with Jupiter viewed behind trees to west.  Very distinct bluish oval area in NEZ near CM in this image; this has been noted on earlier dates.  Note the very dusky activity south of the GRS.

Fortunately, one small opening of "fair" seeing conditions allowed the attached image....immediately after the seeing was such that focusing was not even feasible.

This image shows some areas of considerable interest.  The image (for those not receiving it direct) is found at:

http://www.arksky.org/asoimg/jupiter0404a.JPG

Note the areas:

1) south edge of the NEBs, just west of the CM....this is the vividly "blue/gray" festoon that was reported last week;  it is scintillatingly bluish to the eye and very vivid on raw images.  Note that a similarly-colored festoon is oriented due N-S connecting the NEBs edge with the EB right on the CM in this image.

2) very dark/dusky oval immediately pr. the pr. end of the GRS, just east of CM.

3) the very turbulent nature of the STrZ immediately pr. the GRS leading eastward to the very well defined oval on the s. edge of the SEBs, having a very distinct "feathered" border (this is seen east of the CM).

4) nature of the white ovals immediately south and preceding the GRS in the SSTC.

Seeing poor.  Two areas of much interest in this image.  First is the activity that appears to be increasing within the STZ and the SSTC, with some degree of interacting currents demonstrated near the CM. In the southern half of the NEB there is marked activity beginning near the CM and extending westward.  Note the dark NEB barge on the extreme left edge.

Seeing continued poor.  Continuing to demonstrate very nice delineation of north and south components of the NEB.

A couple of nice image preceding the GRS prior to Jupiter sinking low in the west and turbulent air preceeding a massive warm front headed our way...More Rain!!

"jupiter0406a"

http://www.arksky.org/asoimg/jupiter0406a.jpg

Seeing poor to fair - Some nice activity and detail visible within the SSTC and southern latitudes.  Note the very wide and deep NEBs rift curving westward at the CM.  Very beautiful indentation effect of barge on far left limb.  Much interesting activity within the NEZ!

"jupiter0406b" -

http://www.arksky.org/asoimg/jupiter0406b.jpg

Wonderful activity seen preceding and south of the GRS.  NEB is very turbulent and unsettled in this region.

"jupiter0406c" -

http://www.arksky.org/asoimg/jupiter0406c.jpg

Seeing the worst and Jupiter very low in the western sky; haze is causing the noticeable discoloration.  Some nice contrast features are visible, however, in the STrZ around and south of the GRS as well as in the NEZ.

Subject: Comet Conjunction Reminder!

A quick note to all reminding of the upcoming "comet conjunction" that should be of much interest on April 30.  The comets Ikeya-Zhang and Snyder-Murakami will be within about 3 degrees of one-another in pre-dawn morning skies at about 10:00 U.T.

I have detailed the summary of this on the ASO site (Current News) at:

http://www.arksky.org/cgi-bin/readnews.pl

It will be a challenge, but when else are you going to have two notable comets in so close a span of sky??

Very clear, but seeing is markedly variable tonight; imaging impossible after this image was recorded due to turbulent air.

"jupiter0410a" -

http://www.arksky.org/asoimg/jupiter0410a.jpg

Seeing fair but variable.  Note the very distinct dichotomy of the southern and northern 1/2 of the NEB, with much disruption within the southern half.  Also, the large and dark festoon bridging in the SSTC between the STB and SSTB east of the CM.

Subject: ASO Jupiter Patrol - April 11, 2002 - NEW STrZ/SSTC oval with GRS??

A brief spell of very transparent but turbulent air allowed for only two images, both take with adverse seeing conditions....

However, note the very large and distinctlyl bordered OVAL just west and south of the GRS....it appears in due order to be in for a similar encounter to that of BA during previous months...

Some high res. details of this feature would be very valuable at this point....

"jupiter0411a" -

http://www.arksky.org/asoimg/jupiter0411a.JPG

Seeing poor and unsteady.  Note the now-closing nature of the NEB rift which

appears to be more divided that in past weeks.

"jupiter0411b" -

http://www.arksky.org/asoimg/jupiter0411b.jpg

Seeing very poor; focusing difficult.  Note the very large and circular oval in the SSTC immediately south and following the GRS...appearing very much in character, morphology and size to the oval BA in previous months.  Very curious development!

Yes John, I suspect you may be right....I personally view this as a "void" rather than a physical oval at this time....nonetheless it is an interesting scenario as to the development of such featureless areas of so great a size - particularly amidst the turmoil of this particular latitudinal current in the vicinity right now!

 Very interesting stuff this apparition!

Seeing fair.  Note the nice oval within the SSTC near the CM and the related festoon following it.  Very interesting southward lateral shift to the NEBn and narrowing of the entire NEB complex.....NEZ is quite active, while SEZ - as it has been for the entire apparition - is seemingly void of activity.
