Dear Hitomi,

Thank you so much for your communication -- these viruses have been troublesome.

I am so pleased to hear from you and of your reception of the Japanese translation of Noto. I have a copy of the original English version (NOTO, An Unexplored Corner of Japan, by P Lowell) and enjoyed reading it very much and dreamed of someday visiting those places. I have discussed with Masatsugu the possibility of getting together for a visit to the sites Lowell knew so well and for observation of Mars -- perhaps we can do so in connection with the Grand Opposition of 2003!

Unfortunately, because of Mars's position relative to the Earth, there will be no possibility of seeing flares at Edom Promontorium in 2003, though with any luck, we may be able to convince the Mars Odyssey mission planners to examine the area. It is our best chance for finding water on Mars in the equatorial region, I am convinced.

Hoping to see you soon in Japan.
