To all -

In addition to my direct answer to Kevin on this "very" important issue, lest you missed it.....

I have posted a brief discussion about the possibility of asteroidal impacts such as with 2002MN at:

http://www.arksky.org/cgi-bin/readnews.pl

On the Current News of the Arkansas Sky Observatory web page.

Dr. Clay,

Do you have any information about this rock?  It seems we had a near miss last month, some 75,000 miles.

Subject: SOURCE FOR CLEANING SWABS!!

There seems to be some confusion and difficultly in obtaining the proper cotton pads to clean corrector plates, lenses and all refractive optical surfaces with.

Please follow to the letter the ASO Cleaning Protocol as outlined at:

http://www.arksky.org/asoclean.htm

Regarding the cotton pads, if they leave LINT, you are NOT using the right stuff.  I have found the actual one-and-only source of these wonderful cleaners!

OKAY...HERE IS WHAT TO GET:

"4 x 4 ESTHETIC Gauze lint-free, 4-ply, opens to 8" x 8", non-woven"

"Non-woven, medical-grade wipe ensures lint-free application and removal of a variety of esthetic products"

Barnhardt Mfg., Charlotte, NC

That should do it!  Ask your pharmacy to ORDER IT for you!  Or just call the number given above!

Subject: Comet Ikeya Zhang C2002 C1 & Messier 5

We obtained an image of the "encounter" of comet Ikeya Zhang C/2002 C1 with Messier 5 at June 28.138 as shown on the ASO Comet Patrol page:

http://www.arksky.org/cgi-bin/comettable.pl

Conditions were not good, with high strong haze thus keeping images relative short and noisy via CCD; this image was with the 4" guide refractor.  Field of view is approximately 0.45 x 1 degree.

A direct link to ASO Image Archives without complete data can be obtained at:

http://www.arksky.org/asoimg/ikeya_0628_m5.jpg

Comet Ikeya-Zhang and its encounter (52' arc separation) with the globular star cluster Messier 5 in Serpens. Comet was measured at m1 = 8.6; the globular cluster measure 7.0 magnitude.  The comet tail is distinctly visible for 0.3 degrees in Position Angle 310 degrees.  The comet's nucleus was measured via the 0.31m SCT/CCD at m2 = 9.87.  Degree of condensation was strong, at 8/9.

Note that there appear to be some secondary "streamers" emanating from the comet, very close in angular line with the main tail.

Subject: OT - A happy holiday to all.....

Just a quick note to wish all of our USA observers the very best, happiest and safest of Independence Days.....to those many of you who do not celebrate this in your country, please join us in showing our appreciation for the preservation of the rights of ALL human beings worldwide.

As the world gets smaller and the pace of things sometimes seems frantic and beyond our control, I believe that everyone - no matter what nationality - can appreciate the importance this year of our 4th of July.

May you and your families enjoy this wonderful time...

Subject: ASO Comet Observations - July 4, 2002 U.T.

Hello - some comet observations made through our only break in the heavy clouds in over a week.  These are from this morning, July 4, 2002 U.T. (happy 4th!!)

NOTE  that LINEAR 2001 K5 has brightened nearly 1 magnitude since our June 30 measurement; this was confirmed via two Sky Patrol scopes independently...

Complete observations of the ASO Sky Patrol for current comets is found at www.arksky.org, or the direct link at:

http://www.arksky.org/cgi-bin/comettable.pl

Comet LINEAR - C2001 N2:

*2002 July 04.239 UT: m1 =14.03 ccd, Dia.= 8", DC =3/9, ...0.3m SCT/CCD...P.Clay Sherrod, (ASO, Conway, Arkansas) [round and diffuse, small; Moderate Light pollution, heavy haze]

Comet Schwassman-Wachmann 1 - 29P:

*2002 July 04.314 UT: m2* = 14.35 ccd, Dia.= n/a , DC =7/9*, ...0.3m SCT/CCD...P.Clay Sherrod, (ASO, Conway, Arkansas) [* nucleus/central coma measurements only; heavy haze prevented detection of extent of coma; coma was incredibly transparent and vague; no tail]

Comet du Toit-Neujmin-Delporte - 57P:

*2002 July 04.260 UT: m1 = 15.73 ccd , Dia.= 4", DC = 3/9, ...0.3m SCT/CCD...P.Clay Sherrod, (ASO, Conway, Arkansas) [very near star (mag. 16) making photometric determinations difficult....m1 is likely a bit on the bright side as a result; very high haze; poor conditions - comet is very small, diffuse]

Comet Linear -C/2000 WM1:

*2002 July 04.231 UT: m1 =14.78 ccd, Dia.= 6", DC = 2/9, ...0.3m SCT/CCD...P.Clay Sherrod, (ASO, Conway, Arkansas) [comet round and diffuse;

NOTE that some degree of nuclear condensatioin continues; Moderate Light

pollution, heavy haze]

Comet Linear - C2001 K5: (COMET HAS BRIGHTENED)

*2002 July 04.208 UT: m1 = 13.54ccd, Dia.= 13", DC = 6/9, ...0.3m SCT /CCD...P.Clay Sherrod, (ASO, Conway, Arkansas) [Comet is brighter tonight; two confirming measurements; short, bright and straight tail in PA 189d, 0.6' length; comet maintaining uniform brightness and structure;  Moderate Light pollution, heavy haze]

Comet Ikeya-Zhang c/2002 C1 *2002 July 04.180 UT: *m2 = 12.07 ccd,  Dia.= n/a , DC = 8/9, ...0.3m SCT /CCD...P.Clay Sherrod, (ASO, Conway, Arkansas) [* m2 (nucleus) magnitude given only; coma is increasing transparent and NOT definable as to extent; short, distinct spiked tail in PA 317d, 3.8' length; ; coma is very large and transparent with distinct nucleus, m2 = 12.07 (ccd) moderate Light pollution, heavy haze]
