Report on CAWSES space weather meeting held on Septemper 11-12, 2004, in Beijing (http://srg.bao.ac.cn/IAUS226/MA.html) A CAWSES meeting with the above title was held to discuss science on space weather aspects of solar and heliospheric physics, international collaboration, and future plans of research in this field, during Sept 11-12, 2004, in Beijing, China. The meeting was held in the same venue as, but immediately preceding the IAU symposium 226, "Coronal and Stellar Mass Ejections". The organizing committee consists of K. Shibata (Kyoto, Japan, co-chair), N. Gopalswamy (Washington, USA, co-chair), Y. Yan (Beijing, China, LOC-chair), X. Feng (Beijing, China), B. Schmieder (Meudon, France), J. Wang (Beijing, China), and S. T. Wu (Huntsville, USA). 25 participants attended from 9 countries in spite of a very informal nature of the meeting. The meeting began with on September 11 with an introductory talk by K. Shibata on the CAWSES program and the potential future international collaborations using ground based H alpha full Sun observations. Then, N. Gopalswamy gave an interesting talk about solar sources of geoeffective disturbances, and B. Schmieder reviewed well the present status of space weather research in Europe with some interesting comments on the Haloween storms in Oct-Nov, 2003. J. Wang gave a very nice review on the study of the preflare state, which is probably the most important subject for the success of future space weather prediction. An overview of investigations concerning solar-interplanetary geomagnetic storm connection (SIGMA) was given by X. Feng. The Chinese participation in the IHY (International Heliophysical Year) was discussed by G. Huang. On the second day (Sep 12), Y. Yan presented a comprehensive review of Chinese solar radio astronomy, and Z. Liu introduced a future plan for a 1 m solar optical/infrared telescope project in China. An interesting future space weather monitor project (Quaff project) of China has been introduced by C. Y. Tu. S. Dasso (Argentina) presented a nice study on flux and helicity of magnetic clouds in interplanetary space. Finally, H. Wang talked about solar activity prediction on photospheric magnetic field observations as well as the present status of space weather research in China from solar physics points of view. At the end of the meeting, potential future possible international collaborations under the scope of CAWSES were discussed, and all the participants agreed that solar and heliospheric physicists should be more involved in space weather studies and related meetings, and particularly in the CAWSES project. I would like to thank Dr. S. Basu, Dr. J. Allen, and other CAWSES science steering group members for the partial support of expense of one participant. I would also like to thank Gopalswamy-san, co-chair of the meeting and other SOC members, for their help in organizing this meeting. Yan-san, LOC chair, should be thanked for arranging a beatiful meeting room but also for hosting the meeting dinner and lunch with excellent Chinese food.
