Hi all, here's a false-colour image of Mars from this morning in poor seeing, I decided to use IR750 longpass for the red channel. However green and blue showed almost no detail other than the polar cap and a vague hint of limb clouds.

The resulting colours are not quite right but still there is a fair amount of detail visible.

Sinus Meridiani is visible on the right hand side of the image, with Valles Marineris rising at left. Prominent blue cloud over the north polar region at top.

Hi, all

Not the greatest conditions for opposition night, but better than the recent cloud.

With it being a long, 5h session (including Jupiter and Saturn), I eventually lost the battle with dew before Mars got to greatest elevation, thanks to the recent rains.

Talking about clouds, there was cloud visible extending almost all the way around the limb of the planet.

Solis Lacus at upper left with the Valles Marineris complex below it. Olympus Mons is bright to the right of lower centre.

Hi,
I'm getting some good views with Mars so high in the sky.

Very nice. I tried two monochrome colors (deep red 665nm and IR 850nm).

I'm not sure this is useful as they are not spectrally all that far apart.

Thoughts?

Best,

Dear all,

Sending a batch of seven Mars images from the past three weeks. I've had a couple of nights with good seeing, but weather is more unstable now.

On Sep 18, a bright patch over Argyre near the evening terminator seems to be a light cloud, but is not as evident on other images close to this time.

Olympus and Elysium were brightly yellowish near the morning limb and evening terminator on Oct 10, and orographic clouds over Tharsis are becoming more widespread and brighter in the evening. The NPH has varied considerably in extent, especially large over M Acidalium on Sep 19, and morning hazes are thin and close to the limb.

With best wishes,

Attached to this email please find my new photographs of Mars taken on the 11 th October 2020 from my home between 18:24 and 19:50 UT.

I took the images with my 6 inch SOLIGOR MT-750 reflector. The image was shot afocal through a 15 mm Plössl eyepiece using a FUJIFILM JX600. I also used a 2x Barlow lens. Image stacking was done with REGISTAX. Further processing was done with IRIS and also ImageJ software.

The weather conditions were quite good. The seeing was good. I am most proud of the last image taken at 19:50 UT.

One can even see the Valles Marineris in all three images.

¤••••• Subject: Mars, Oct 4 RGB+ enhanced cloud

Received: 12 October 2020 at 14:18 JST

Hi all, here's an interesting experiment done with image data from Oct 4. I had very good seeing that night but I've only now had the chance to come back to it and process it the way I wanted to try out.

In addition to normal RGB I recorded several runs using a narrow B filter (400-450nm) which shows the faint clouds more clearly, and I've added that as an overlay onto the RGB data to make this cloud-enhanced image.

Unfortunately the clouds now show all as white rather than some of the limb cloud in its natural blue colour, but otherwise this image shows more clearly the faint clouds that were around at the time, in particular the cloud near the centre of the image over Arsia Mons.

cheers, Anthony

Had only 2-3 minutes of sudden cloud break to work with but seeing was decent during that brief time.
Short barlows + ADC combo is better than long barlows, and am trying not to let Registax auto color balance recently (two mistakes I made this apparition).

Jet stream is coming back this week so maybe last image from me showing clear details (hoping otherwise though!).

Hi all,

I took my chances relatively early yesterday evening, as there was cloud forecast for later, and although seeing didn't look particularly good, I managed a full data set.

Olympus Mons is bright at lower left with cloud over the Tharsis Montes and Valles Marineris at left.

There are more subtle clouds extending across the Amazonis region towards Elysium.

Best regards, Clyde

Hi all, seeing wasn't so good this morning so the imaging was limited to IR650 longpass.

This image shows Solis Lacus as the prominent "Eye of Mars" feature near the centre of the image, with one of the solar systems deepest chasms making up the northerly edge (Valles Marineris). Olympus Mons is rising at top left, and the south polar cap is present at the bottom of the image.

Some cloud can be seen on the northern and eastern limbs.

Comments:
Sub-optimal imaging conditions (some jet stream effects) but this was actually quite a nice view visually in the telescope!
Was able to view all of the macro details in the image and also tried to process the color I saw visually.

I don't have any super high res images from this apparition, but visually the views have been outstanding.
Hoping to get in 1-2 more images before the winter jet stream becomes permanent overhead.

Dear All,

Two days from closest approach, I grabbed Mars in fairly poor seeing between clouds.

Syrtis Major is almost central on the disk, blue hazes are seen at the limbs, and the S polar cap is almost gone.

I have many other images not sent anywhere, taken in September, but I tend to process them, just to free up the space on the PC, and then give up at the stage of putting the labels on...

Olympus Mons is prominent near the top of the image and some thin cloud can be seen over Arsia Mons just right of centre. The south polar cap is quite small now, and some cloud can be seen over the north polar region at top.

Just over an hours worth of data was merged to make this image, in variable but sometimes quite good seeing.

I have noticed that the North Polar Hood breaks apart during the Martian day into several clumps of denser clouds I have not seen this before.

I have seen it in denser layers in a horizontal form but not into clumps..

Anyone have any ideas on this.

The clumping North polar Hood is most evident seen on the 3rd image..

Hi, ALL

Damianfs revised image of 30 September is great, as well as his accurate and beautiful sketch on the same night.

For the imagers, checking the visual Mars image as often as possible would be a good way to get information to make final images to be natural, reliable and reproducible.

His drawing reminds me of my good old nights and days when the planetary sketching was the only way to express/demonstrate/show the optical performance of our telescopes.

Attached here are my drawings of the red planet taken almost half a century ago with my 25cm F7.6 Newtonian X480 under nearly perfect seeing condition. I still enjoy visual appearance of Mars every time before starting image capturing.

¤••••• Subject: Mars re-worked - September 30th

Received: 3 October 2020 at 03:03 JST

Hi all,

Firstly my thanks to Ian Sharp and Anthony Wesley for their comment and discussion. The original version of this image showed artifacts in places that i suspected were not real details, and on comparison with some of my own previous work during August and images by others it confirmed there was an issue. Please update records with this new image.

http://www.damianpeach.com/mars2020/m2020_09_30dprp.jpg

I suspect the problems here were a result of a few factors. Here are some details on changes i made:

1. Smaller align boxes in AS3 on the contrasted albedo areas mixed with larger align boxes overall.

2. A more careful alignment of the WJ alignment frame using the new 11.2.3 version. I was quite surprised to see after a few attempts at slightly different angles this can affect small scale details. I am begining to see how important it is to get this spot on - using the moons may be the only real solution as Anthony has mentioned.

3. I removed a few R and G images that were not as sharp as the best data during the capture period.

Overall its been an interesting afternoon working on this data experimenting and finally managed to produce a result i'm happy with.

Best wishes,
